How to brush your teeth the right way

Keeping your teeth and gums healthy doesn’t have to be complicated. Good dental hygiene is all about the right techniques, the right tools and consistent habits. By following these simple brushing tips you can help to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. From flossing to choosing the right toothbrush, each step plays an important role in maintaining your overall dental health.

  • Clean between teeth with dental floss or interdental brushes – before cleaning your teeth.
  • Two is the magic number – brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes
  • Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste
  • Choose a toothbrush with a small head to reach every area
  • Use gentle, circular movements and don’t press too hard
  • Brush the surface of every tooth and along your gumline too
  • Don’t rinse your mouth after brushing
  • Change your toothbrush regularly (every two to three months)
  • Keeping on top of your dental health doesn’t stop there

To loosen plaque and food that’s stuck, ready to be brushed away by your toothbrush. Do this after brushing and you’ll remove the fluoride (from your toothpaste) that protects your teeth.

Anything less and you won’t be cleaning all the surfaces of your teeth effectively.

It’s just the right amount of fluoride – the essential ingredient that will protect your teeth against decay.

To get into all the nooks and crannies, ensuring you’re cleaning your teeth thoroughly. Electric toothbrushes are best for removing plaque.

Brushing in small circles is proven to be more effective for cleaning and being gentle will prevent wearing down the surface of teeth.

To remove plaque on teeth and where your teeth meet your gums – to help prevent gum disease.

By keeping toothpaste on your teeth for longer you’ll be maximising the preventative benefits.

Worn out toothbrushes with frayed bristles might not remove plaque well enough.

Don’t forget to visit your dental hygienist or dental therapist at least once every six months and your dentist at least once a year.

Top tip: If you’ve consumed anything acidic, like fizzy drinks (including alcohol) and fruit, wait at least 30 minutes before brushing. Otherwise, you'll brush away enamel that has been softened by the acid.
